Sooraj Pancholi had a dream debut in HERO [2015], a film produced by Salman Khan. The film underperformed at the box office but the hype of the film was such that it opened at Rs. 6.85 crore, which was the highest then for a film featuring debutants. Sooraj then, shockingly, disappeared and four years later, he’s finally back with SATELLITE SHANKAR. So does SATELLITE SHANKAR emerge as a great entertainer and meet the expectations raised by the trailer? Or does it fail to entice? Let’s analyse.

Movie Review: Satellite Shankar

SATELLITE SHANKAR is about the extraordinary journey of a soldier that brings a nation together. Shankar (Sooraj Pancholi) is a rifleman posted near the LOC in Jammu and Kashmir. He is very popular in his regiment because of his jovial nature. He carries with him an idol of Lord Shankar. He pretends that it’s a satellite that can help him connect to anyone in the world. With this little trick, he keeps the officers motivated, despite them not getting leaves. In a firing by the Pakistani forces, Shankar gets hurt. He’s admitted in the hospital and though the injury is not serious, he is asked to rest for eight days. Shankar requests his commanding officer, Cheema (Sanjay Gurbaxani) that he’ll like to go to his hometown, Pollachi, in Tamil Nadu to meet his mother and get her cataract treated. Cheema agrees on the condition that Shankar reaches the base 8 days later at 8 am. Shankar promises to be back on the stipulated day and time by giving a ‘Sainik shapath’. Shankar’s colleagues request him to hand over gifts and other items to his family members while he’s on his way to his hometown. Shankar then begins his three-day-long journey on the train from Jammu. As soon as he commences the trip, an old couple in his bogie are asked to leave as they have boarded the wrong station. While helping them find the right train at the next station, Kathua, Shankar ends up missing his own train. He along with Meera Bakshi (Palomi Ghosh), a vlogger, then take a taxi to Pathankot, where their respective trains was to halt. Again, Shankar is not able to make it on time in his train while helping Meera. However, the family member of an army colleague Subedar Jeetu Singh (Pradeep Singh) picks up Shankar’s luggage from his train when it halts at a station in Punjab. Shankar reaches Jeetu Singh’s residence in Bagha and uses his ‘satellite’ to spread happiness and solve their problem. Shankar then heads to Agra to finally catch his train to Pollachi. Yet again, Shankar gives it a miss as he gets busy in saving people who were in a bus that had met with an accident. Interestingly, even Meera is there in the bus and Shankar gets captured in her video. He overnight becomes a hero of the nation. Meera takes it upon herself to find Shankar and she sets off to find him. Her followers cross the million mark and they too get involved in this journey to ensure that Shankar not only reaches his hometown soon but also that he’s able to adhere to his ‘Sainik Shapath’ and report back to base 8 days later at 8 am. What happens next forms the rest of the film.

Vishal Vijay Kumar and Irfan Kamal’s story is utopian but has potential and can be best described as ‘Munna Bhai meets Bajrangi Bhaijaan’! Vishal Vijay Kumar and Irfan Kamal’s screenplay however don’t do justice to the plot in hand. A few scenes stand out individually but as part of the film, they seem a bit convenient and unconvincing. Vishal Vijay Kumar and Irfan Kamal’s dialogues however are appropriate. But a few dialogues are in Punjabi, Tamil and Bengali and are difficult to comprehend. There should have been subtitles for these lines.

Irfan Kamal’s direction is weak and a bit unpolished. He had a great subject in hand but first he messed it up at the screenplay stage. Then, with his execution, he spoilt it even more. The first 15-20 minutes seem very silly and one might wonder what exactly is happening in the film. The concept of the ‘satellite’ gets clear only after 30-35 minutes in the Punjab village scene. The film boasts of very filmy and convenient plot points and it needed an expert direction so that viewers can digest it. In the absence of it, it’ll be difficult for them to really get engaged with the film.

SATELLITE SHANKAR’s beginning portions might seem bizarre. The concept of the ‘satellite’ might not be easy to comprehend. Even the scene of Shankar getting injured in the cross-border firing is not well helmed, although the idea is interesting. The film gets a bit interesting as Shankar gets in the train and he ends up missing it. However, he misses his train three times and that becomes too much. What stands out in the first half is the scene in the Punjab village and the bus accident sequence. Post-interval, the film has some fine moments but again, the direction and script play spoilsport. Still, the film remains somewhat engaging. However, the climax is when the film really falls down. The stone pelting part looks completely forced and mars the rhythm and even tone of the film.

Sooraj Pancholi gives a very fine performance and he’s sure to amaze you with his sheer hard work. There’s this earnestness in the way he has played the part and it’s completely in sync with his character. Also, he is quite entertaining and watch out for the scene where he imitates Prime Minister Narendra Modi! Megha Akash (Pramila) is lovely and lends able support. Her scene at Salem railway station is memorable. But sadly, her track is not well handled and it lacks conviction. Palomi Ghosh has a brilliant screen presence and leaves a tremendous mark. Upendra Limaye (Inspector Chavan) is dependable. Pradeep Singh, Anurag Mishra (Anwar Hussain), Anil K Reji (Sridhar), Asif Basra (Taxi Driver), Subrat Dutta (TC) and Sanjay Gurbaxani are fine.

Music is nothing special. ‘Pyaar Ka Satellite’ is like a theme track and is the only song that works. ‘Aari Aari’ is foot tapping but comes at a time when viewers are dazed about the film’s concept. ‘Tere Sang’ is forgettable while ‘Jai He’ has a patriotic feel and hence stands out. Sandeep Shirodkar’s background score is appropriate.

Jitan Harmeet Singh’s cinematography is excellent. The film has been shot in real locations to bring the authenticity and the various locales are well captured. Abbas Ali Moghul’s action is dated. Tariq Umar Khan’s production design is as per the requirement of the film. Same goes for Dipika Lal and Anirudh Singh’s costumes. White Apple’s VFX is decent. Chandan Arora’s editing is sany complaints.

On the whole, SATELLITE SHANKAR is a well-intentioned flick but poor script and direction play spoilsport. At the box office, it’ll have a tough time because of lack of awareness.

Jackie Chan - Police Story

Who doesn’t love Jackie Chan? The martial arts actor, stunt choreographer, producer, director, singer and man of all trades has been kicking ass and taking names for decades, and his success didn’t happen overnight. It took a lot of hard work and persistence for Jackie Chan to become so famous.

So, how did Jackie become Jackie Chan? As it turns out, the actor/director has been in the entertainment business for almost his whole life. It was a combination of skill, talent, luck and unfathomable dedication to his craft that resulted in Jackie Chan becoming such a major martial arts phenomena.

Over the course of 65 years, Jackie Chan went from a child actor to one of the most famous men in Hong Kong’s history. Let’s take a look at Jackie Chan’s legacy, and we’ll discover the ways in which the veteran martial arts artist extraordinaire became the beloved, revered personality he is today.

Jackie Chan - Qin Xiang Lian

Early Life And Child Actor Status

On April 7th, 1954 in Hong Kong, Jackie Chan was born Chan Kong-sang. He was the son of two Chinese Civil War refugees. Even from a young age, young Chan had a wealth of energy. Nicknamed Pao-pao, which translates to “Cannonball,” he was always on the move and always rolling around. It appears that some things in life simply don’t change. During his formative years, Chan lived near the French ambassador in Hong Kong, for whom his parents worked, in the Victoria Peak district. It was at the young age of five that Chan found himself in his first film, 1962’s Big and Little Wong Tin Bar.

Throughout the following years, Jackie Chan appeared in small parts in films like The Love Eterne and Come Drink With Me. He also appeared in the film A Touch Of Zen, where the young actor signed Chu Mu’s Great Earth Film Company. But during his film experience, Jackie Chan also worked hard as a student. Jackie Chan’s first formative years of martial arts training came when the child was sent to the China Drama Academy, which is a Peking Opera School where Chan trained vigorously for the next decade. In addition to excelling in martial arts, the athlete was also a well-trained acrobatic.

It did not take long before Jackie Chan became part of the Seven Little Fortunes, which is a performance group made from talented students inside the school. It was during this period in his life that Chan Kong-sang earned his first stage name, Yuen Lo, in homage to his master. He would go on to study other forms of martial arts, including Karate, Judo, Taekwondo and Jeet Kune Do. He also continued to push himself as an on-screen performer.

Jackie Chan - Little Tiger of Canton

Stunt Work and Early Lead Roles

At the age of 17, Chan Kong-sang worked as a stuntman for a pair of Bruce Lee pictures, Fist Of Fury and Enter The Dragon. There is a good chance you’ve heard of that latter one before. During his work on these celebrated films, Jackie Chan worked under the alias Chan Yuen Lung. It was later that year that Jackie Chan earned his first starring role in Little Tiger of Canton. The film only had a limited release in 1973. It was a bit of a rough patch for Jackie Chan shortly after that.

Having trouble finding stunt work, and due to the commercial failure of his earlier films, Jackie Chan starred in the adult comedy, All in the Family, in 1975. It was the only film that featured Jackie Chan not performing a single fight or stunt scene. It was also the first time Jackie Chan did a nude scene. In 1976, Jackie Chan briefly attended college at Dickson College, but that tenure didn’t last long. Chan soon became a construction worker, where he earned the nickname of “Little Jack.” Over time, it became “Jackie.” While he didn’t stay in the construction business, the nickname obviously stuck.

Things were starting to turn around for Jackie Chan. Later that year, Jackie Chan received a telegram from Willie Chan, who was a film producer in the Hong Kong film industry. He was impressed by Jackie Chan’s stunt work, as you would imagine most people would be, and he offered him a film role. He was hoping to model Jackie Chan after Bruce Lee, and he gave him the film New Fist Of Fury. He went by the name Sing Lung, which translates to “becoming a dragon.” Literally.

Evidently, Jackie Chan wasn’t fully accustomed to Bruce Lee’s expert level of fighting, and New Fist Of Fury was also a financial flop. However, Willie Chan was not deterred. He continued to produce films for Chan in this vein, but none of them made much of an impact at the box office or for movie lovers. Then, in 1978 Chan finally got a hit. After several attempts at making a name for himself, he found success with Snake in the Eagle’s Shadow.

Jackie Chan - Drunken Master

The Early Days Of Jackie Chan’s Fame

Under a two-picture deal, Jackie Chan had a one-two punch with Snake In the Eagle’s Shadow and Drunken Master later that same year. The films were successful for two very key reasons. One, Jackie Chan was given complete freedom when it came to his stunt work, finally letting him excel in his own specific way. Two, the films also established a comedic kung fu genre, which was considered refreshing for movie audiences at this time in Hong Kong. While Snake In The Eagle’s Shadow was definitely profitable, it was ultimately Drunken Master that pushed Jackie Chan to stardom.

It was around this time that Jackie Chan made his directorial debut with The Fearless Hyena. It was clear that Jackie Chan was growing, and it was time for him to change things around. He began to work with Golden Harvest, a transition that didn’t come easily from his former collaborator Lo Wei, but he continued to work with Willie Chan, who became Jackie’s personal manager and firm friend, something that stayed true for over 30 years.

It was around this time that Jackie Chan became an international celebrity. In the 1980s, Jackie Chan appeared in American productions like The Big Brawl and The Cannonball Run in 1980 and 1981, respectively. It was through the latter film that Chan became inspired to include outtakes during the credits. There were a couple attempts by Jackie Chan to break big in the American market. Yet he decided to return to Hong Kong.

It was there where Jackie Chan’s fame continue to excel, notably in East Asia, with hit movies such as The Young Master and Dragon Lord. It was during these big movies, in particular, that Chan’s action style was evolving, with the actor/stunt choreographer incorporating more elaborate stunts.

It was around this time that Jackie Chan was propelling himself to make the movies that would define his career forever. These iconic movies would include Project A, Police Story and Armour of God, all of which were critically acclaimed, big commercial successes and award-winning productions.

Jackie Chan - Police Story

Continued Success And Hollywood Breakthrough

By this point in time, Jackie Chan was a bonafide movie star. In the late ’80s and early ’90s, Jackie Chan would go on to make sequels to some of his biggest movies, which continued to propel their legacies. Those movies include Project A Part II, Police Story 2, Armour of God II: Operation Condor and Police Story 3: Super Cop. He also made Drunken Master II and Police Story 4: First Strike. These movies continued to make Jackie Chan both an award-winning actor/filmmaker and a big box office sensation. But these hit movies weren’t making Jackie Chan a huge name in the United States yet.

Well, that would change soon enough. Jackie Chan was finally getting the attention he deserved from Hollywood producers, but the actor refused to be typecast into the villain roles he was being offered. It was when Chan appeared in 1995’s Rumble in the Bronx that he found his early success in Hollywood. The movie found a cult following in the U.S. that was considered rare for Hong Kong movie stars. Rumble in the Bronx‘s warm response led to Police Story 3‘s U.S. release, where it was retitled Supercop. Then, Chan became a Hollywood star with 1998’s Rush Hour, a buddy cop movie he starred in alongside Chris Tucker.

Jackie Chan - Rush Hour

Jackie Chan’s Megastar Status

From there, Jackie Chan was everywhere. A huge celebrity all around the world, the actor made his final movie with Golden Harvest, titled Who Am I? The actor was putting himself and his name in a variety of projects, including movies, video games, animated shows and more. His Hollywood success was also continuing with 2000’s Shanghai Noon and its sequel, 2003’s Shanghai Knights. He also found a great deal of fame with 2001’s Rush Hour 2.

It was around this time that Jackie Chan tried some new movies, allowing himself to make movies with special effects like 2002’s The Tuxedo, 2002’s The Medallion and 2004’s Around the World in 80 Days remake. These particular movies didn’t quite capture the same commercial or critical success, but it was clear that by this point in time, Jackie Chan was in the height of his fame, He was considered “the most recognized star in the world” film scholar Andrew Willis in his book, Film Stars: Hollywood and Beyond, which was released in 2004.

While Jackie Chan was still a major celebrity and a true bonafide movie star, he was seemingly dissatisfied with the restrictions that Hollywood was giving him. He felt the roles were limited and he was frustrated by the lack of creative control he found in his Hollywood projects. Also, as he was getting older, Jackie Chan had more interest his pursuing dramatic roles, particularly as he felt it was time to do less physically-intensive roles. It was also clear that there were audiences willing to see Chan push himself as a dramatic performer, with movies like New Police Story, The Myth and Rob-B-Hood doing well.

Jackie Chan would continue to make Hollywood productions from time-to-time. He made Rush Hour 3 in 2007, and he made The Forbidden Kingdom with Jet Li in 2008. He also provided his voice for a role to Kung Fu Panda 1-3. But it was with The Karate Kid remake in 2010 that American audiences were first given a chance to see Jackie Chan’s dramatic potential. This potential was seen more recently with Chan’s lead role in 2017’s The Foreigner.

From here, Jackie Chan has continued to work, but he’s also experimenting with different projects he has in the works. He is currently in post-production on his latest film, The Diary, which he wrote and directed yet does not star in. This is extremely rare for Jackie Chan as a director, but it was clear that Chinese Zodiac, his 2012 film, was considered a bit of a last hurrah in terms of his stint as an action-comedy lead and director. While he still continues to make movies as an actor and he still does some projects behind-the-scenes, it’s apparent that Chan is focusing on different efforts currently.

Thankfully, Jackie Chan is still keeping busy. He will next be seen in Project X-Traction, which is a big blockbuster that also stars John Cena. He also has other movies in the work in addition to the movies mentioned above. Also, it’s worth noting that Jackie Chan recently received an Oscar for his Lifetime Achievements in the world of moviemaking. In my opinion, it’s well-deserved. Hopefully, we haven’t seen the last of Jackie Chan. It’s clear that this incredible work ethic, mixed with talent, luck, skill and persistence, led to Chan’s enormous success and good fortune — both here and abroad.

chicago fire season 8 kelly severide taylor kinney nbc

Kelly Severide has been a fixture on Chicago Fire from the very beginning, so it came as a shock in Season 8 when he agreed to a transfer to the Office of Fire Investigation. While his dad was a legend at OFI in his day, Severide seemed like he would never willingly give up his spot at the head of Squad 3. With the action of Chicago Fire set primarily at Firehouse 51 with firefighters and paramedics in action, a big question was how Severide’s story would continue.

Fortunately, Chicago Fire showrunner Derek Haas spoke with CinemaBlend ahead of the fall finale, and he said this when asked how he plans on keeping Severide’s stories interesting and connected now that he’s over at OFI:

We wanted to design his OFI experience as, originally he goes in thinking skeptically that this is just going to be pencil pushing desk work, but that’s not the Severide way. And he’s cut from the same cloth as Benny Severide, who was also in the OFI world and we gave him this partner, Seager, who we really like, played by Andy Allo, and the idea was, the pitch from the beginning was ‘Let’s make them like Mulder and Scully,’ with just an easy back and forth and flashlights and dust and solving crimes. I love that Captain Van Meter, is like, ‘Oh my God, I just told you to rubber stamp this and move on.’ You detailed the wrong guy, then. Because we the audience knows that’s not the Severide way, so we just wanted to keep it interesting and keep crossing. You’re going to see Casey cross into Severide and Seager’s investigation this week, so that’s just on us as writers to keep it interesting.

Although Severide may have made the (potentially temporary) move to OFI on Chicago Fire, that doesn’t mean he’s just going to sit quietly behind a desk and deal with paperwork! Since it wasn’t his idea to make the jump from Squad to OFI, but rather at the insistence of Chief Grissom, it makes sense that he’s going to mix things up in his new role, and Casey will evidently pay him a visit at OFI as a connection to the Firehouse 51 action. Will Severide still find ways to race into danger, even though he’s supposed to be investigating arsons from long ago?

Only time will tell, but Derek Haas’ reveal that the Severide/Seager relationship was patterned after Mulder and Scully should make Chicago Fire fans who used to watch The X-Files pretty excited, and even those who haven’t experienced the emotional highs and lows of all things X can probably appreciate a Mulder/Scully dynamic. Theirs is arguably one of the most iconic partnerships in TV history.

As long as Chicago Fire doesn’t send Stella on a journey similar to poor Scully, a Mulder/Scully dynamic between Severide and Seager could be a shot of energy to the OFI story. Of course, Stella/Severide fans will have to cross their fingers that Severide and Seager stay platonic, and it is hard to imagine Severide straying from Stella at this point. When I, a longtime fan of The X-Files myself, noted that I never expected to hear Kelly Severide compared to Fox Mulder, Derek Haas said this:

Just the relationship of the two partners. That’s the interesting part to me. That easy sort of banter that they had in the face of what would scare most people.

So, don’t expect Severide and Seager to go full X-Files to chase down aliens when they begin their banter. Based on how backed up OFI was by the time Severide agreed to leave Firehouse 51 for a time, the duo will have plenty of investigating to do without bringing aliens or monsters into the mix. Fire fans already know that Severide doesn’t shy away from scary situations; seeing him do it as part of OFI will be new and interesting.

The question now is how long Severide’s stint at OFI will last. When he agreed to help clear the backlog of arson cases, he fully intended to put in the work and then return to Squad at Firehouse 51, but his dad found a passion for investigation at OFI, and Severide has always had a knack for it. Could something happen for him to decide to extend his time at OFI longer, or even indefinitely?

Chicago Fire is almost finished for 2019, but you can see more of Severide’s story at OFI in the fall finale when it airs on Wednesday, November 20. The episode will also feature the return of Monica Raymund as Gabby Dawson for the first time since her departure in the Season 7 premiere, and Derek Haas revealed that there will still be “heat” between Casey and Dawson.

Be sure to tune in to One Chicago on November 20 to see Chicago Med fall finale at 8 p.m. ET with some revelations for Natalie, the Chicago Fire fall finale at 9 p.m. ET, and the Chicago P.D. finale with a bloody Halstead and “a wake-up call” for Upton at 10 p.m. ET, all on NBC.

At the heart of Brian Kirk’s 21 Bridges is a fantastic high-concept idea. The title refers to one of the many ways in which people are able to access the island of Manhattan, and the plot follows a detective protagonist through a night when all of those entrances and exits are shutdown during a citywide manhunt for a pair of cop killers. Matched with a high caliber ensemble, you imagine a sprawling thriller that can skillfully flip the script and make the viewer question who the real heroes are, all while constructing epic showdowns as the criminals try to escape with their lives.

Sadly, though, that’s not how the film comes together. While there is a stellar cast getting some interesting character material to work with, every plot development comes out of obvious tropes (up to including a third act reveal), and lacks scope to the point where it feels like it’s just rushing to the finish. While were used to movies like this getting a lot of running time real estate to work with (for example Michael Mann’s Heat is 172 minutes, and Andrew Davis’ The Fugitive is 140 minutes), this one is able to wrap up in 103 minutes, and you feel it as the pacing prevents any kind of real audience attachment.

Scripted by Matthew Michael Carnahan and Adam Mervis, the film centers on Andre Davis (Chadwick Boseman), an NYPD detective who has a reputation for being quick with his trigger finger – though all the cases later proved that he was in the right acting as he did. Being the son of a father who was killed in the line of duty, he is both enraged and horrified to be called to a crime scene one night where a drug heist gone wrong resulted in eight cops being murdered, as well as a civilian.

Getting pressure from the captain of the murdered officers, Captain McKenna (J.K. Simmons), and working with an assigned partner, narcotics detective Frankie Burns (Sienna Miller), Davis is able to orchestrate it so that transportation in and out of Manhattan is shut down until those responsible are found – but he only has until sunrise to take the perps down, and then all routes will be opened for morning commutes.

Those perps are Ray (Taylor Kitsch) and Michael (Stephan James), the former a veteran-turned-criminal who used to partner with the latter’s older brother until the sibling was killed. And their problems are even bigger than just trying to get away from the police. The tip they initially received for the heist was seriously inaccurate, as they discover 300 kilograms of cocaine in a safe where they expected 30 kilograms. Carrying a payload way bigger than expected, they have to unload the product, and then try and find a way off the island without detection.

21 Bridges starts well, but winds up relying on clichés and obvious plot turns.

With setups like this, it typically helps if the narrative makes it so that the criminals are always five steps ahead of those pursuing them, allowing for clever plot maneuvers as well as some thrilling narrow escapes. But 21 Bridges instead starts on its back foot in this regard. While there definitely is some drama to be created from Ray and Michael not being skilled professionals, it doesn’t balance with Davis being such a skilled detective. The majority of the movie has the police being right on top of their targets, and it steals away from the thrill of the chase.

Not helping the movie’s case are some seriously forced contrivances, and some seriously unfortunate twist attempts. Specific instances in mind are too spoilery to be openly discussed in this spoiler-free forum, but in 21 Bridges we once again see the return of modernity’s favorite MacGuffin, the secret-filled USB drive, and it’s patently obvious from the first 20 minutes how things are going to shake out in the final five.

Chadwick Boseman, Taylor Kitsch and Stephen James do well with 21 Bridges’ strong characters.

Weak as its plotting may be, 21 Bridges does have a strength in its character construction, as the majority of the leads have really interesting personalities and backstories that keep you engaged with what they’re doing. Principally there is Chadwick Boseman, who continues to prove himself a powerful and capable leading man – even when he’s not playing a superhero or historical figures. Andre is an interesting character that Boseman makes compelling with a nuanced performance, as it’s exciting to see the wheels turn in his head as he calls the shots.

Playing the mice to Boseman’s cat, Taylor Kitsch and Stephan James also make for a great pair and play off each other well. There’s an id versus ego dynamic between the two click into, and as a result it’s exciting to watch how they individually respond to their circumstances. You ultimately wish they had more moves to make in the story just because they are fun to watch. The story just doesn’t provide.

You want to see a lot more of New York than 21 Bridges has to provide.

One could also make the argument that a movie titled 21 Bridges should probably feature at least one face-off on a bridge – but not only is it a problem that the film doesn’t do that, but it also doesn’t do as much exploration as you’d like to see. As seen countless times in Hollywood history, New York is a brilliantly cinematic city, but there’s no real effort made through the script to explore its unique culture and geography. This is possibly an extension of the fact that the majority of production took place in Philadelphia, but whatever the reason, it simply doesn’t feel like the “New York Movie” that it should be.

21 Bridges is far from a bad movie – it’s just more of a middle-of-the-road movie than you’d expect from the talent involved and the central concept. With more inventive and well-paced second and third acts to match its first, the film could have joined a strong legacy of great titles in the genre, but instead it’s more a movie you may find yourself half watching on a lazy Saturday afternoon.

Ever since Chris Pine and Chris Hemsworth walked away from the negotiations table in summer 2018, Star Trek 4 has been in a holding pattern, and the departure of director S.J. Clarkson at the beginning of this year made it seem like the project had been shelved. However, with just weeks until the end of 2019, word has come in that Star Trek 4 is back on track, now with Noah Hawley being lined up to captain this proverbial ship.

Well known for his work on TV shows like Fargo and Legion, and the writer of that Doctor Doom movie we’ll never see, Noah Hawley is reportedly in final talks with Paramount Pictures to write and direct Star Trek 4, i.e. the fourth installment of the Kelvin Timeline film series. According to Deadline, if a deal is worked out, Hawley would produce Star Trek 4 through his 26 Keys production banner, alongside J.J Abrams and his Bad Robot banner.

If things work out for Noah Hawley on the Star Trek 4 front, this will be his second time directing a movie, the first time being Lucy in the Sky, which was released on October 4. No specific plot details for Hawley’s version of Star Trek 4 have been revealed yet, other than that it will see the return of the actors who make up the crew of the rebooted U.S.S. Enterprise, namely Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, Zoe Saldana, Simon Pegg and John Cho.

Originally the plan for Star Trek 4 was for Captain James T. Kirk to meet his father, George Kirk, during a time travel adventure. Played by Chris Hemsworth, George died in battle only minutes after James was born in 2009’s Star Trek, which is one of the ways the Kelvin timeline differs from the original Star Trek timeline.

However, according The Hollywood Reporter’s Aaron Couch, this script has been scrapped, presumably meaning that Chris Hemsworth is no longer involved with Star Trek 4. Couch also clarified that this movie is separate from the Star Trek movie Quentin Tarantino has been attached to for two years.

EXPECTATIONS

A launch-pad is always special, especially so when it is that of a star son. Moreover, when the debut affair is a love story then you do expect soulful music as well. This is what makes one look forward to what does Sunny Deol has in store for the launch of his son Karan Deol along with newcomer Sahher Bambba. The good thing is that he brings on board hottest sensations Sachet-Parampara to put together the soundtrack with Siddharth-Garima doing the honours as the lyricists. Rishi Rich produces the music and his touch is quite visible in there.

MUSIC

Newcomer Hansraj Raghuwanshi, who is known for his devotional songs, makes his Bollywood foray with ‘Aadha Bhi Zyaada’. A number about living life to the fullest, this one is a peppy outing and in fact reminds one of ‘Sochna Kya Jo Bhi Hoga Dekha Jaayega’ from Sunny Deol’s Ghayal. That song was rendered by Bappi Lahiri and incidentally Hansraj’s voice pretty much sounds similar to that of the veteran composer-singer. Meanwhile, Karan Deol too makes an intermittent appearance as a rapper in this song which does carry the sound of ‘Jai Bhole’.

The song that is set to become an anthem in time to come though is the title track ‘Pal Pal Dil Ke Paas’. An excellent number that is very high on melody and showcases the best side of composers Sachet-Parampara, it has poetic lyrics by Sidharth-Garima that makes a very strong impression. Meanwhile, the song is made special due to the voice of Arijit Singh who is superb all over again and also Parampara Thakur who shows once again that other than being an efficient composer, she is also a very good singer.

No wonder, the song deserves to be heard in a repeat mode and that is evident in the kind of confidence that the makers have as well, what with ‘Pal Pal Dil Ke Pass’ arriving in as many as three more versions. Whether it is the second version, the ‘celebration’ version or the one which goes by the title ‘Suun le Rabb’, the song is beautiful every time it is heard and one just can’t let the melody go off from one’s mind and heart.

Composer Tanishk Bagchi makes a special appearance with a solitary number, ‘Ho Jaa Awara’. He too demonstrates once again that there is a lot more to him than the recreated versions that he is largely known for, what with this one turning out to be yet another beautiful number in Pal Pal Dil Ke Paas. Monali Thakur is the one who kick-starts the proceedings for the song and somewhere also reminds one of the kind of pitch that Hema Sardesai used to take in her songs back in the 90s. Ash King is her accompanying partner in this peppy-n-sweet outing.

It is back to Sachet and Parampara and this time around other than being the composers, they are also the singers for three songs in a row. First to arrive is ‘Ishaq Chaliya’ which has a good hook to it and makes one tap feet instantly. A Punjabi-Hindi number, this one has a good pace as well and lends a happy sound to the overall outing. A difficult song to sing, especially the manner in which Sachet brings on the hook words, this one takes a bit of time to grow on you but eventually you get a good hang of it.

This is followed by ‘Dil Uda Patanga’ which has Parampara Thakur taking the lead and Sachet Tandon joining her soon enough. A song which has a teenage feel to it with an Indi-pop flavour, there is certain innocence to it that should work with the teenagers if the film manages to strike a chord with the audiences. Play this one loop and you won’t be disappointed at all.

Third song that arrives in the voice of Sachet and Parampara is ‘Maa Ka Mann’ and this one is a devotional piece with a difference. While the sound of ‘Satnam Shri Waheguru’ keeps playing in your mind during the track’s duration, you like the manner in which there is a soulful feel being carried. This one should make for a good situational piece in the film’s narrative.

OVERALL

The music of Pal Pal Dil Ke Pass was expected to be good but the soundtrack actually goes on to exceed expectations. Sahcet-Parampara, Sidharth-Garima and Richie Rich do quite well in their biggest album till date where they are entrusted to put together music for the two newcomers. There is certain consistency in the film’s music and that is always on the cards as well when there is a single team put together in charge instead of multiple composers, lyricists and singers. This one is a winner.

OUR PICK(S)

‘Pal Pal Dil Ke Paas’, ‘Ishaq Chaliya’, ‘Ho Jaa Awara’

Nawazuddin Siddiqui is known for his intense roles and crime-infested films. But it’s a known fact that he has a great comic timing and if given an opportunity, can excel in such roles. After trying his hands in few such films in the past like FREAKY ALI [2016] etc, the versatile actor will now be seen in a similar space with MOTICHOOR CHAKNACHOOR. So does MOTICHOOR CHAKNACHOOR manage to entertain and give a good time to the audiences? Or does it fail to deliver? Let’s analyse.

Movie Review: Motichoor Chaknachoor

MOTICHOOR CHAKNACHOOR is a love story of two neighbours. Anita aka Annie (Athiya Shetty) resides in Bhopal and her only aim in life is to marry an NRI and settle abroad. However when she meets prospective grooms, she makes her demand clear and moreover she is bigmouthed. As a result, she gets rejected and in some cases, she rejects when she finds out that the guy is not going to move to foreign shores. Meanwhile, Pushpender Tyagi (Nawazuddin Siddiqui) has just returned from Dubai after a hiatus. He stays with his family in the house next to that of Annie. Pushpender falls for Annie instantly but Annie doesn’t show interest. Just like Annie, even Pushpender wants to get hitched desperately. When an overweight girl agrees to marry him, he gives his nod though he doesn’t have feelings for her. Pushpender is 36 and he feels that he is way past the age where he can reject any girl. Hence he reluctantly accepts the proposal. Annie meanwhile gives up after rejecting and getting rejected. With no option in hand, her maternal aunt (Karuna Pandey) advises Annie to woo Pushpender. After all, even Pushpender works in Dubai, also a foreign place. Annie hence tries to serenade Pushpender. She tries to first break off his alliance with the overweight girl but her efforts prove futile. Thankfully for Annie, Pushpender’s mother (Vibha Chibber) calls off the alliance when the to-be-bride’s family refuses to pay dowry. Annie then straightaway tells Pushpender that she wishes to marry him. Pushpender is overjoyed but Annie is a bit reluctant as she can’t pay the kind of dowry that his mother is asking for. Pushpender promises Annie that he won’t ask for a single paisa and both get married on the same day! The families obviously are shocked but they relent eventually. Annie is extremely happy as her dream of marrying an NRI is fulfilled. However, Pushpender has a secret that can prove disastrous for Annie. What happens next forms the rest of the film.

Debamitra Biswal’s story is very simple and nothing great but has potential for a fine and entertaining script. The screenplay however is not consistent. There are scenes that are great but those are few and far between. Also, the first half has more interesting scenes than the second half due to which the post-interval portions aren’t that engaging. Bhupendra Singh’s dialogues are very funny and clever, and raise laughs.

Debamitra Biswal’s direction has promise but falters due to several reasons. On the plus side, the setting looks straight out of life. The director has neatly explained the neighbourhood, the way the houses of Annie and Pushpender are next to each other. Some scenes are very well handled. On the flipside, the interest rises and falls throughout. Also, the second half portions are difficult to digest. Viewers are forced to accept that it’s Annie who was wrong for marrying Pushpender for the Dubai factor. Even Pushpender has hidden a fact about his employment which was also not acceptable at all. But Pushpender is not made a villain as such. Shockingly, in one crucial scene, he even slaps Annie. If that is not enough, then Annie’s father refuses to take her back in his house. One hopes that towards the end, both will profusely apologize to Annie for their behaviour. Shockingly, that never happens and only Pushpender says sorry, that too by writing a letter. Hence, it becomes difficult to root for such a character

CRAZY FUN – Nawazuddin Siddiqui & Athiya Shetty’s EPIC Quiz | Motichoor Chaknachoor

MOTICHOOR CHAKNACHOOR begins on a fair note. The setting and characters are well established. The situations seem comical but don’t really make viewers laugh. But after the initial 30-35 minutes, the film turns into a riot. The scene where Pushpender meets the overweight girl is well executed and written. Same goes for the scene where Pushpender is buying vegetables and gets confronted by Annie. The best part of the first half is when Pushpender beats his brother Hakim with his chappal. The intermission point comes as a bolt from the blue. Post interval, the interest and even the humour quotient dip. The situations become very unconvincing and even regressive to an extent. The climax is supposed to be funny but seems unimaginative.

Talking of performances, Nawazuddin Siddiqui seems a bit off but then gets in the groove. His comic timing as expected is bang on and even in emotional scenes, he is great. Athiya Shetty is a surprise of the film. From her accent to her performance to body language and to her understanding the character, she is spot on! Karuna Pandey gets to play a fine character and is entertaining. Vibha Chibber is decent. Abhishek Rawat (Hakim) is superb as Pushpender’s brother. Navni Parihar (Annie’s mother), Bhumika Dube (Hema), Devansh Kumar (Ikka) and Usha Nagar Dadi are okay.

Music gels well with the film’s narrative. ‘Crazy Lagdi’ is catchy followed by ‘Kaise Banegi Sarkar’. ‘Choti Choti Gal’ and ‘Aaj Jaage Rehna’ are soulful but drag the narrative. Abhijeet Vaghani’s background score however is terrific and unique.

Suhas Gujarathi’s cinematography is very nice. The film has been shot in unconventional locales of Bhopal, that one hasn’t seen in films before. Tariq Umar Khan’s production design is realistic. Shadab Malik’s costumes are straight out of life. Praveen Kathikuloth’s editing is nothing special.

On the whole, MOTICHOOR CHAKNACHOOR boasts of a very entertaining first half but the second half plays spoilsport heavily. At the box office, it will face a tough time due to the lack of buzz.
